木胎扇形貝母赤皿
About
I have always been very fond of bookbinding. This time, I happened to receive a Japanese antique wooden fan-shaped mother-of-pearl red plate. Starting from the color and craftsmanship characteristics of the object itself (mother-of-pearl inlay, gold silk wood grain background, fan-shaped overlapping composition), its vocabulary is translated and reused in the overall packaging design.
Design Theory
1. Front Design
The central pattern references the arc structure of the buildings in Ma Lin's "Binging-Ying Night Tour"; the main concept draws on the scene imagery of "Kinkaku-ji" from the "Yukio Mishima Biography," with doors and windows rendered in gold foil to enhance the sense of ritual and tranquility.
2. Back Design
Inspired by a composition from Yasuhira Sugiura's bookbinding: the white area is treated with mother-of-pearl shell sequins to enhance luster layers; the gold foil parts are darkened to create contrast and rhythm.
3. Spine and Belly Band
Text serves as the main visual focus, emphasizing the object's title, supplemented with Japanese for layered detail. A layout of horizontal, vertical, and longitudinal columns establishes a clear and stable sense of order.
